Because everyone has a unique story, counselling can look different for each person.
But generally speaking, at City Centre Counselling, the first few sessions involve getting to know one another. We'll take time to look at the complete picture of who you are including how things have been, how they are now, and consider what is it that you want to gain from therapy.
Together we'll discuss what type of therapy and intervention(s) would be most suitable (and that you’re comfortable with) and co-create goals that serve as a guide for your therapy. Throughout this process you'll be getting to know me to make sure we're a good fit.
Depending on your needs and goals, the frequency of sessions can vary - from just an hour to weekly sessions over a few months, or perhaps you feel bi-monthly or monthly sessions is best. It's your journey, you decide.
Through the work we do together, and with your active participation both within and between sessions, the potential benefits can include:
While there are potential benefits to counselling, success is not guaranteed and there are potential risks. Since therapy often involves exploring unpleasant feelings, events, or experiences, there is a chance you may feel worse before you feel better (probably not what you wanted to hear).
To get the most out of counselling, here are a few suggestions:
Great question. Clients are entitled to confidentiality in counselling. This is the foundation of a safe and effective counselling relationship.
In the first session, I'll start with a process called informed consent. I'll provide, review, and offer to discuss and answer any questions related to my procedures, your rights, and your responsibilities as a client. For example, the right to attend counselling voluntarily, to refuse or withdraw at any time, and the right to confidentiality.
From the initial phone consultation and throughout counselling any information you share will remain confidential. However, there are a few situations where I may not be able to guarantee confidentiality:
In these instances, every reasonable effort will be made to discuss these circumstances with you prior to the involvement of other professionals and I'll disclose the least amount of confidential information necessary to a third party to contribute to conditions for safety.
To find information on the guidelines around confidentiality and consent for minors (under the age of 18), go to Teen Counselling.
The cost varies depending on the service at City Centre Counselling.
At the time of your session, I accept cash or e-Transfer and will provide you with a receipt. I understand that fees for counselling services are costly and not everyone has access to insurance. For those who require assistance, I offer a sliding scale fee to accommodate your financial needs.
Insurance is helpful to have but it isn't straightforward. City Centre Counselling offers direct billing through Telus eClaims but not all insurance providers participate in direct billing.
Prior to counselling, it's important that you check with your insurance provider to determine the specifics of your plan.
Here are some questions to ask:
