Medicine Hat + online parenting support from anywhere in Alberta
Parenting can be fulfilling and fun, but it can also be hard. Whether you're a first-time parent navigating the ups and downs of adolescence or you're familiar in this role, parenting a teen comes with anticipated changes and challenges.
As they assert independence teens may push boundaries and react strongly when limits are enforced. Relationships with peers, romantic interests, and extracurriculars take centre stage which may leave parents struggling with their own feelings of loss and change.
At a time when young people have difficulty regulating their emotions yet strive for independence and less parental control, it makes sense that conflict and feeling less connected are common responses for both parent and teen.
Although it's helpful to know that your teen’s emotion-driven behaviour is "normal," having the tools to help them cope with those emotions is even better.
Learning to self-regulate is an essential life skill that contributes to your teen's overall well-being, success, and can help strengthen the parent-teen relationship.
HOW I CAN HELP
At City Centre Counselling, I provide a welcoming and supportive space for parents to share their concerns around parenthood. Through conversation, psychoeducation, and self-reflective activities parents have an opportunity to gain insight and to develop skills that will help them stay connected to their teen during these challenging years.
Parenting Support Topics May Include:
Understanding what's happening in your teen's life and in your relationship with them can help you better support your teen— and yourself— as they transition into young adulthood.
Whether young people show it or not they need their parents to show up, I encourage you to reach out!

A parenting support session is $55.00 for a 60-minute session.
Because parenting support is informational in nature and is not 'counselling or therapy' for parents, the session may not be covered by your insurance. I suggest that you check with your provider about the specifics of your plan.
For payment, at the time of your session, I accept cash or e-Transfer and will provide you with a receipt.

Great question. The information covered in parenting support is geared toward adolescent mental health. If your child is between 11 and 17 years of age, feel free to reach out.
However, if you have concerns related to your child and they're under the age of 11, I would encourage you to connect with another counselling professional who specializes in working with younger children. I provide counselling for teens between the ages of 11 - 17.
Preferably yes. It’s recommended to have both parents attend at least the first session. This will allow each parent to discuss their individual concerns as well address the issues you share as a parenting unit.
However, if only one parent can attend, I’ll provide session material for the other parent to review at their convenience. Emotion coaching is a learned skill and will take time to develop. It's important for both parents to understand the concepts and learn how to apply them consistently with your teen.
Yes. Parents can meet online for parenting support sessions. At City Centre Counselling ALL services are available in person, online, or through hybrid scheduling (combining in person and online sessions).
Knowing that life can be busy and unforeseen situations arise, many clients appreciate the flexibility that a hybrid approach offers.
